It is not without reason that the dining table is said to be the most important place in the house. We do not limit ourselves to eating with it, because we also use it to work, play board games and meet friends. If it is to be functional, the whole family should be able to fit in successfully with it, while putting emphasis on both practicality and good design, as well as on fitting into the style of the apartment to which it is to go. It is not without reason that it is said that even too salty soup tastes good in a dining room with commitment.

It's good style.

There is no shortage of people who think that based on the style in which the table is maintained, one can say a lot about its owner. Perhaps we are no longer lying at dinner like the Romans, but we can not disagree with the fact that feasting is still very popular. An Italian dinner can last even several hours, and Georgian supers with sophisticated toasts cannot even be mentioned without a good table, bearing in mind that huge tables are set up there even in the courtyards, and each of them is obligatorily well-set. Referring to the already mentioned Roman feasts, it is worth reminding that their organisers did not want only the full stomachs of the participants of such meetings. Aesthetic impressions were no less important, as the guests ate admiring dance shows and admired frescoes and statues.

Also in the Middle Ages, the celebration of food was not abandoned. The master of the castle usually ate sitting at a long and heavy table between one bite and another, taking care of important matters. Guests were not so lucky anymore and were usually seated on simple benches. In the eighteenth century, the medieval austerity of the decor was slowly abandoned and rich fabrics appeared on the tables. It was also the period when the cupboard entered the dining room.

Dining room in a contemporary version A big dining table in the dining room

Today it is difficult to talk about one trend related to dining room decor, although it is still assumed that a person who can boast of a really beautiful table does not have to think about exhibiting other furniture at all. Such a solution is quite common in homes in Greece, although there the quality of the dining room is determined not so much by the beauty of the table itself as by the food that appears on it. The absolute basis for this is not only the table itself, but also at least twelve chairs. Everything else is of secondary importance, especially since it can distract guests. However, this is not the only interesting trend. After all, French dining rooms are dominated by cupboards and English cupboards, often enriched with a collection of figures and cups. The Scandinavians approach the decoration of this room in a slightly different way, as their dining rooms are dominated by open bookcases. Everywhere, however, the table is the central piece of furniture and its importance is crucial.

Size matters

The answer to the question of what the ideal size of a table should be seems natural, because the larger the table, the better. However, not everyone can allow for such a solution, which is conditioned primarily by the room surface. The ideal solution is a large dining room, even when combined with a kitchen or living room. In slightly smaller rooms, you can think of elegant folding tables, although they also require a space of at least 12 square metres. If you have a small dining room, you have to accept that you may have problems with a big party at the table. It is therefore a good idea to consider a table attached to the wall, as its advantage is that it can be freely folded after use.

But one thing we should have no doubt about - regardless of whether the table is large or small, it should not only be strong but also well finished. We have a choice of wooden and glass tables as well as those made of plastic and metal. An interesting solution are also tables made of combined materials, especially the recently fashionable glass-metal tables.

The shape of the table and its consequences Round table

As was the case with size, the shape of the table is also largely dependent on the shape of the room it is to be placed in. The most classic are rectangular tables straight in form, wooden and equipped with solid legs. They work well in classic arrangements, but will also appeal to lovers of dining rooms in Scandinavian, Provencal and country style. The rectangular table is also a tribute to practicality, as it can be positioned freely in the room. When deciding on a round table, keep in mind that it likes to dominate, so it is best if it appears in the middle of the dining room. Sometimes it is a decorative element in itself, and its advantage is that it optically takes up less space than its rectangular counterpart. It is chosen, among other things, because it makes it easier to maintain visual contact between eaters. Another proposal is the table, which takes the shape of an ellipse, i.e. a rectangle with rounded corners. It does not work in the corner of the dining room, but in the center of the room it looks great. Its advantage is also a high level of security, so it is worth considering its purchase especially if children often appear in the dining room.
