When choosing a colour for a child's room, many different aspects such as age, gender and, above all, the preferences of the young person must be taken into account. However, this is only the first step - no less important are the quality and type of paint used to paint the walls.
Colour is an important aspect of the decoration of a child's room. However, it is not only about the colours of the walls, but also about the furnishing of such a room. The colours are also influenced by furniture and accessories. However, it is the walls that most often have a decisive influence on the choice of colors of other elements of the toddler's environment.
How to choose colours for a child?
The colour that appears in the child's room should not be a coincidence. It is worth making a well-considered decision here and taking into account some important aspects. The age of the child is especially important. Research conducted at the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań proves that children under 3 years of age do not recognize pastel colours. Such toddlers, on the other hand, react vividly to intense colours and contrasting colour combinations. It's a little easier with older children. Such children can simply be asked what colours they like. The colour preferences of the youngest start to be shaped as early as around 2 years of age, which does not mean that they will not change later.
The choice of colour depends on the personal preferences of the room owner, but is also often influenced by current fashion and dominant trends. It is also worth noting how the colour affects the child psychologically. After all, it is known that there is a whole range of colors that calm and soothe the nerves. The blue colour, which is often used by child therapists during psychological sessions, can be mentioned here. On the other hand, the color of this color makes you lazy. Similarly, white has a calming effect, which additionally perfectly emphasizes other colours appearing in the room. Yellow, on the other hand, stimulates the brain to work and has a positive effect on the nervous system and adds energy. However, it can be tiring in excess; it can be similarly bad to be around this colour for a longer period of time. In the case of girls, a light pink colour that optimistically tunes in may work well, but it is better to avoid excess red as it can cause too much excitement and anxiety.
The colour should also be adapted to the size of the children's room. In small spaces, it is better to limit yourself to one colour, preferably white or light blue, which will optically enlarge the room slightly. In larger rooms, however, the colours may be more intense and darker.
The type of paint is not insignificant
Deciding on a specific colour is one thing, but do not forget to choose the right colour for your child's room. This is a particularly demanding room, very vulnerable to stains and dirt. Therefore, it is worth choosing a paint specially dedicated for children's rooms. This type of paint is composed of appropriate components, which protects the surface against the absorption of dirt and its deep penetration. This makes it easy to remove any stains (the manufacturer guarantees the stain resistance). In addition, paints dedicated for children's rooms are usually characterized by high resistance to scrubbing and washing, so they can withstand even frequent stain removal.
Some paints for children's rooms are silvery. This element protects the wall surface against the development of bacteria and effectively limits the development of fungi. On the market we can also find paints, whose specially selected formula significantly reduces the level of formaldehyde in the air in the child's room. Formaldehyde in furniture and other home furnishings, for example, has a negative effect on the human body and can cause various ailments (e.g. allergies, fatigue, irritations, disorders of the immune system, etc.).
The colour in the child's room may change with age and preferences. It is important, however, that the choice of a child should always take into account various issues - from practical and psychological to personal aesthetic preferences of the offspring. It is not worth saving on the quality of the paint in this case either.
